Candy corn was originally called "Chicken Feed" when it was first produced in the late 1880s by the Wunderle/Goelitz confectionery line (the company later became Jelly Belly). The name was used to reflect its peckable, farm-adjacent appearance and the era’s emphasis on agricultural imagery, but it was eventually renamed candy corn to appeal to a broader audience as American society shifted away from a strictly agrarian identity. Today, while many brands continue to produce it (notably Brach’s under Ferrara), the original "Chicken Feed" name is a known historical footnote in the candy’s history.
