Fire Lord Ozai’s plan during Sozin’s Comet was to use the comet’s massive power boost to lead a fleet of Fire Nation airships and burn down the entire Earth Kingdom, erasing its people, culture, and hope, and crowning himself “Phoenix King” over a world dominated by the Fire Nation.
The war meeting and the “burn it all” strategy
In a war meeting held just before the comet’s arrival, Ozai gathered his generals, advisors, Zuko, and Azula to decide how best to wield the comet’s once-in-a-century power. He framed the moment as his chance to outdo his grandfather, Sozin, who had used the same comet to wipe out the Air Nomads.
When pressed for ideas, Azula and Zuko (largely through sarcasm and manipulation) pushed the most extreme option: raze the Earth Kingdom completely. Ozai embraced this, declaring that the Fire Nation would:
- Use the comet’s power to ignite immense, uncontrollable fires across the Earth Kingdom.
- Target not only military positions but also forests, farmland, and settlements to crush morale and resistance.
- Accept that Fire Nation soldiers and colonists already in those areas would likely die as well, since the goal was total devastation, not careful occupation.
His intention wasn’t just conquest; it was to erase the Earth Kingdom as a functioning nation and break the spirit of anyone who might keep fighting.
Phoenix King and the symbolism of annihilation
Ozai didn’t just want to win the war; he wanted to redefine it. By destroying the Earth Kingdom during Sozin’s Comet, he aimed to:
- Send an unmistakable message of Fire Nation supremacy to the world.
- Establish himself as “Phoenix King,” a new title meant to place him above all other nations and rulers.
- Use terror and visible, apocalyptic destruction to force the Water Tribes and any remaining holdouts into submission afterward.
The plan was explicitly genocidal in effect: even if some people survived, their society, food supply, and will to resist would be shattered.
Why this plan, and not something else?
Earlier in the war, the Fire Nation had focused on capturing key cities like Ba Sing Se and Omashu. By the time Sozin’s Comet arrived, Ba Sing Se had already fallen to Azula’s coup, so the traditional “conquer the capital” strategy was moot.
Ozai shifted to using the comet as a tool of shock and awe: a final, overwhelming display of power designed to make continued resistance feel pointless. The airship fleet gave him the mobility to spread fire across huge areas quickly, turning the comet’s power into a continent-wide weapon rather than a single decisive battle.
In short, Ozai’s Sozin’s Comet plan was less about winning battles and more about ending the war by annihilating the Earth Kingdom’s capacity and will to exist as an independent nation, while elevating himself to a self-styled global ruler.
