The first virtual reality headset was created in 1968 by American computer scientist Ivan Sutherland and his student, Bob Sproull. The headset was named "The Sword of Damocles" and was a large and heavy contraption that was suspended from the ceiling. It was connected to a computer and not a camera, and the computer-generated graphics were very primitive wireframe rooms and objects. However, it was too heavy for any user to comfortably wear and was not commercially available. The first VR headset that was developed for immersive remote viewing of dangerous situations by the military was the Headsight, developed in 1961 by two Philco Corporation engineers.
