The first virtual reality headset was created in 1968 by American computer scientist Ivan Sutherland and his student, Bob Sproull. The headset was named "The Sword of Damocles" and was a large and heavy contraption that was suspended from the ceiling. However, it was too heavy for any user to comfortably wear and was not commercially available.
