The Gallipoli campaign was primarily undertaken to open a sea route to Russia and knock the Ottoman Empire out of World War I by capturing Constantinople (now Istanbul), thereby forcing Turkey out of the war and enabling Allied naval passage through the Dardanelles to the Black Sea. This would also disrupt German–Ottoman cooperation and relieve pressure on the Western Front by diverting Ottoman resources and potentially bringing Russia supplies through a secure route.
