Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. It was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of World War I. The day became known as Armistice Day in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. In 1954, after the return of service personnel from both World War II and the Korean War, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill rededicating November 11 as Veterans Day, encouraging Americans to commit themselves to the cause of peace and to honor America’s veterans for their courage, honor, patriotism, and sacrifice. Congress amended the bill on June 1, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans," and it has been known as Veterans Day since.
