what water do you use for formula

When preparing infant formula, it is important to use clean water for a safe source free of bacteria or other microorganisms that may cause disease, and low in certain minerals and contaminants that may be harmful. Here are some guidelines on what water to use for formula:

  • Tap water: Unless there is a known contamination of your local water source, you can use tap water to prepare concentrated liquid or powdered formula. In general, it is best to primarily use safe tap water that is fluoridated and occasionally use some non-fluoridated bottled water. If you are concerned about lead in your tap water, ask your public water supplier to test for lead, or talk to your healthcare provider about lead testing for your child.

  • Bottled water: Virtually any type of bottled water can be safely used for mixing formula, including purified, distilled, deionized, or demineralized water. However, be aware that the fluoride content in bottled water varies, and if your child is exclusively consuming infant formula reconstituted with water that contains fluoride, there may be an increased chance for mild dental fluorosis.

  • Well water: Well water is not safe for baby formula due to the risk of contaminants.

It is important to follow the instructions on the product label when preparing formula, and not to add water to ready-to-feed liquid formula.
