The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published in October 1888. The magazine was founded as a scholarly journal, nine months after the establishment of the National Geographic Society, and was initially sent to 165 charter members. The first issue cost 50 cents and contained no photographs. The magazine began including pictures in 1905, and its first color photos appeared in the 1910s.
