To manage contacts on WhatsApp, you primarily add, edit, or delete contacts through your phone's address book, as WhatsApp syncs with it to recognize which contacts use WhatsApp.
How to Add a Contact on WhatsApp
- Add via New Chat:
- Open the Chats tab.
- Tap the New chat icon.
- Select New contact.
- Enter the contact's details and tap Save.
- Add from an Existing Chat:
- Open a chat with an unsaved number.
- Tap the phone number at the top to open Chat Info.
- Tap Save and enter the contact details.
- Alternatively, tap Add > Create new contact or Add to existing contact.
- Add from Groups:
- In a group chat, tap the phone number of the person you want to save.
- Tap i > Save > Save.
- On KaiOS Devices:
- Tap New chat > Options > Add new contact.
- Choose to save to Phone memory or SIM memory.
- Enter the contact's name and number, then save.
- If contacts don't appear, use Reload contacts in the New chat menu.
How to Edit a Contact
- Since WhatsApp uses your phone's address book, you need to edit the contact there:
- Open your phone’s address book.
- Find and select the contact.
- Tap Edit and update the details.
- Save changes; WhatsApp will reflect these updates.
Important Notes
- You cannot add or delete contacts directly from WhatsApp Web or linked devices.
- WhatsApp profile names and photos are set by the users themselves; you cannot change these for your contacts.
- Deleting a contact must be done through your phone’s address book, not WhatsApp itself
