Baby hedgehogs, called hoglets, are typically born between June and July, although the birthing season can start from early spring and extend into autumn. The gestation period for hedgehogs is about 35 days. Females may have one or sometimes two litters per year, with the first litter usually arriving in early summer and a possible second one in late September or October, though the latter's survival rate is lower due to the approaching winter. Hoglets are born blind, deaf, and without spines, which harden within a few hours after birth. They stay in the nest for about three to four weeks before starting to forage with their mother.
