Taxes are generally due on October 15 when you file for an extension. The original tax filing deadline is April 15 (unless it falls on a weekend or holiday), and by filing IRS Form 4868 before that date, you can extend the deadline to file your tax return until October 15 of the same year. However, an extension to file does NOT extend the time to pay taxes owed, which are still due by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. For U.S. citizens abroad, there is an automatic two-month extension to June 15, with the possibility to extend further to October 15 upon request. Summary:
- Regular tax due date: April 15
- Extended filing deadline with Form 4868: October 15
- Taxes owed are still due on April 15, even with an extension (to avoid penalties)
- U.S. expats get an automatic extension to June 15, with an option to extend to October 15
This applies for the 2024 tax year, filing in 2025.
