when can babies see color

Babies start to see colors gradually after birth. At birth, newborns primarily see in shades of black, white, and gray, with very poor color vision. Within about 2 weeks, babies begin to detect differences in light and dark shades. By around 1 month, they can detect the brightness and intensity of colors and start to see some basic colors like red. Between 2 and 4 months, babies perceive more colors and shades, beginning to differentiate between greens and reds. By roughly 3 to 4 months, their color vision develops to the point they can see many colors and even different shades and hues. Full color vision similar to adults is generally reached by about 4 to 5 months of age, although the vividness and saturation of colors continues to mature over time. In summary:

  • Birth to 2 weeks: mainly black, white, and shades of gray
  • Around 1 month: detection of bright colors, especially red
  • 2 to 4 months: expanding range of color perception, including greens and reds
  • About 4 months: nearly full color vision with ability to see various colors and shades
  • 5 months: generally good color vision close to adult levels

This development coincides with maturation of the retina and visual cortex in the baby's brain.
