Babies generally start lifting and turning their heads by around 2 months of age, especially during tummy time. Significant head control, where they can hold their head up without support, usually develops between 3 to 5 months. By around 4 to 6 months, most babies have enough strength to hold their head up steadily without support. Some infants may begin trying as early as 1 month, but if by 3 to 4 months a baby is not showing signs of head control, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician. Supporting the baby's head is still important until the baby gains sufficient neck strength to hold it up independently.
