You can typically start to feel your baby move between 16 and 25 weeks of pregnancy. This first movement is known as "quickening" and may feel like tiny flutters, butterflies, or gentle twitches. For first-time mothers, it might be closer to 20-25 weeks before they notice these movements. Women who have been pregnant before may feel movements earlier, sometimes around 13-16 weeks. The movements become stronger and more distinct as the pregnancy progresses, especially in the second and third trimesters, with noticeable kicks, jabs, and rolls.
Sensations might be easier to detect when sitting or lying down quietly. Your baby will continue to move throughout pregnancy, but the type and frequency of movements change as the baby grows and space becomes more limited in the uterus.
