In the UK, the minimum age to learn to drive a car is 17 years old. However, you can apply for a provisional driving licence when you are 15 years and 9 months old, but you cannot start driving until you reach 17. There is an exception for people receiving the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), who can start driving at 16 years old. When driving with a provisional licence, you must be supervised by a qualified driver aged at least 21 who has held a full driving licence for at least three years. To drive independently, you must pass both the theory and practical driving tests.
