Amelia Earhart went missing on July 2, 1937, near Howland Island in the central Pacific Ocean while attempting to fly around the world with her navigator Fred Noonan. They were trying to land on Howland Island, but the plane ran out of fuel, and the last radio transmission indicated they were lost. Despite extensive search efforts, neither Earhart nor her plane were ever found, and she was declared lost at sea on July 19, 1937.
