Ansett Airlines collapsed when it was placed into voluntary administration on September 12, 2001. Its operations were grounded on September 14, 2001, after the administrator determined the airline was not viable to continue due to lack of funds, leading to the cessation of flights and 16,000 employees losing their jobs.
