The Los Angeles Chargers officially relocated from San Diego on January 12, 2017.
Announcement Details
Team owner Dean Spanos announced the decision via a letter, stating the move would begin with the 2017 NFL season after 56 years in San Diego. This followed failed stadium negotiations in San Diego and an NFL owners' vote in 2016 granting the Chargers an option to join the Rams in Los Angeles.
Initial Move Logistics
The Chargers played their first two seasons (2017-2018) at the 27,000-seat StubHub Center (now Dignity Health Sports Park) in Carson, California, as a temporary home. They then shared SoFi Stadium in Inglewood with the Rams starting in 2020. The relocation involved a $645 million NFL fee paid by the team.
