Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue on August 3, 1492. He set out from the port of Palos in southern Spain with three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. Columbus' expedition led to the discovery of land in the Americas on October 12, 1492, when his fleet reached an island in the Bahamas, which he named San Salvador.
