Cleopatra VII, the last ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, died on either August 10 or August 12, 30 BC, in Alexandria when she was 39 years old. The exact cause of her death is uncertain, but the most popular belief is that she died by suicide, traditionally said to be by allowing the bite of an asp (Egyptian cobra). However, some ancient sources suggest she may have poisoned herself with toxic ointment or poison introduced with a sharp implement. There are also debates among modern scholars about whether she was murdered or forced to commit suicide by Octavian (the future Roman Emperor Augustus). Her death marked the end of Ptolemaic rule in Egypt and the beginning of Roman Egypt as a province of the Roman Empire.
