Daylight Saving Time (DST) was first introduced in Germany on April 30, 1916, during World War I as an energy-saving measure. The United States followed by adopting DST in 1918, starting on March 31, 1918. Initially, it was used as a wartime measure and was later repealed after the war. DST became more standardized and widespread after World War II and was formally established in the US by the Uniform Time Act of 1966.
