George Washington died at his home in Mount Vernon on December 14, 1799, at the age of 67. His death followed a brief illness caused by a severe throat infection, often described as quinsy or acute epiglottitis. He fell ill after being out in inclement weather and not changing out of his wet clothes, which likely contributed to his condition. Despite treatment by doctors, including bloodletting and other medical practices of the time, his condition worsened, and he passed away between 10 and 11 p.m. on December 14, 1799. His last words were reportedly "'Tis well," and he was surrounded by close family and friends at the time of his death.
