The Greater Western Sydney Giants (GWS Giants) joined the Australian Football League (AFL) in 2012 as the league's 18th active club. Their first season in the AFL was in March 2012 after being granted a license on July 29, 2010, to enter the competition starting that year. The club was officially formed around 2009 and had spent some time in development leagues prior to their AFL debut.
