Adolf Hitler died by suicide on April 30, 1945. He committed suicide by gunshot in his underground bunker, the Führerbunker, in Berlin as Soviet troops were closing in on the city. On the same day, his longtime companion Eva Braun, whom he had married just one day earlier, also committed suicide by cyanide poisoning. Following their deaths, their bodies were carried outside, doused with petrol, and burned as per Hitler's instructions. News of his death was announced in Germany on May 1, 1945.
