Japan's surrender in World War II was officially announced by Emperor Hirohito on August 15, 1945. The formal signing of the surrender took place later, on September 2, 1945, aboard the U.S. Navy battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This signing marked the official end of World War II. The surrender document was signed by Japanese representatives Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu, and accepted by General Douglas MacArthur on behalf of the Allied Powers.
