Richard Nixon announced his intention to resign the presidency on the evening of August 8, 1974, in a national television address from the Oval Office. He officially resigned the next day, on August 9, 1974, submitting his signed letter of resignation to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Nixon became the only U.S. president to resign from office amid the Watergate scandal, facing near-certain impeachment and removal from office at that time. Vice President Gerald Ford succeeded him upon his resignation.
