Osama bin Laden died on May 2, 2011. He was killed during a U.S. military operation called Operation Neptune Spear in Abbottabad, Pakistan, carried out by Navy SEAL Team Six under the direction of President Barack Obama. The raid took place shortly before 1:00 a.m. local time, and Bin Laden was shot and killed during the assault on his compound. After his death, his body was taken to Afghanistan for identification and then buried at sea in the Arabian Sea for political, practical, and religious reasons.
