when did port adelaide join the afl

Port Adelaide Football Club joined the Australian Football League (AFL) in 1997. The club, originally founded in 1870, was granted a licence to compete in the AFL starting from the 1997 season, becoming the second South Australian-based team in the competition after the Adelaide Football Club which joined in 1991.
