Residential schools in Canada operated for over 160 years, with the system beginning around the 1830s and becoming federally funded by the 1880s. The last federally funded residential school closed in 1997, with schools having operated across most provinces and territories. The last recognized residential school to close was Kivalliq Hall in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, which closed in 1997, although earlier accounts sometimes state 1996 for other schools. Most residential schools ceased operation by the mid-1970s, but a few continued until the late 1990s.
