Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope run on April 12, 1980, starting in St. John's, Newfoundland. He ran for 143 days, covering approximately 5,373 kilometers, until he was forced to stop on September 1, 1980, just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, due to the return and spread of his cancer to his lungs.
