The First Fleet arrived in Australia at Botany Bay between January 18 and January 20, 1788. However, Governor Arthur Phillip decided against settling at Botany Bay and chose Port Jackson, specifically Sydney Cove, as the site for the new colony. The fleet then moved and landed at Sydney Cove on January 26, 1788. This date is celebrated as Australia Day and marks the beginning of European colonization of Australia. The First Fleet consisted of 11 ships that had departed from Portsmouth, England on May 13, 1787, and traveled for over 250 days before this arrival.
