The Home Internationals, also known as the British Home Championship, ended after the 1983–84 football season. The competition was discontinued following that season when England and Scotland announced they would no longer participate, citing waning interest, fixture congestion, and rising hooliganism as key reasons. The final tournament took place from December 1983 to May 1984, with Northern Ireland winning the last championship on goal difference. This marked the end of the oldest international football tournament that had started in 1884 and lasted nearly 100 years, with interruptions during the World Wars and civil unrest in Northern Ireland in 1981.
