when did the proms start

The Proms started on August 10, 1895. The festival was the idea of impresario Robert Newman, who organized the first series of promenade concerts at London's Queen's Hall. The aim was to make classical music accessible to a wider audience by offering low ticket prices and a less formal atmosphere. The conductor Henry Wood was brought in to help develop and lead these concerts, which became known as the Proms.
