The Rapture theory began in the early 19th century. It is generally credited to John Nelson Darby, a 19th-century theologian who developed the concept around the 1830s. Darby's teachings were based on his understanding of biblical prophecy and dispensationalism, which divided history into distinct periods. Although some earlier hints or ideas somewhat resembling the Rapture concept existed, Darby is recognized as the main originator and popularizer of the modern Rapture theory. His ideas became more influential and widespread in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly through the Scofield Reference Bible and other popular works.
