Vasco da Gama first came to India on May 20, 1498. He arrived near Calicut (present-day Kozhikode) on the southwest coast of India, where he met the Zamorin, the regional king of Calicut. This voyage marked the first time a European reached India by sea, sailing around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa.
