Wrigley Field got lights installed and turned on for the first time on August 8, 1988. Although plans to install lights date back to the early 1940s, the actual installation was delayed due to World War II and local neighborhood opposition. The first scheduled night game on August 8, 1988, was rained out after 3½ innings, so the first official night game was completed the following night, August 9, 1988, when the Cubs defeated the New York Mets 6-4.
