World War II in Europe ended in early May 1945. The formal unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany took place on May 7, 1945, at Reims, France, and this surrender went into effect on May 8, 1945. This day is celebrated as Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day). Due to time zone differences, the Soviet Union celebrated Victory Day on May 9, 1945, when the surrender was officially enacted in Berlin. Some isolated fighting continued for a few days after the surrender, but May 8, 1945, is generally recognized as the end of World War II in Europe.
