Hummingbirds in Missouri, primarily the Ruby-throated species, typically start their southward migration around mid-August. Most hummingbirds leave Missouri by the end of August or early September, with almost all gone by mid- September. However, some stragglers can be seen as late as the end of September. By early October, nearly all of them have left the state. It is generally recommended to keep hummingbird feeders out until no hummingbirds have been seen for two weeks to support any late migrants. This migration pattern corresponds with their travel to wintering grounds in southern Mexico and Central America.
