Back blows are delivered to the infant after positioning them face-down along your forearm or thigh, with the head lower than the chest. Use up to five firm back blows in the middle of the back between the shoulder blades to try to dislodge the object. After each back blow, check whether the airway has cleared before continuing. If the object remains lodged and the infant is still choking or not breathing, proceed with chest thrusts (two fingers placed just below the nipple line) for infants under 1 year, up to five thrusts, and continue to reassess after each thrust. If the infant remains unresponsive or the airway does not clear, call emergency services immediately and follow further instructions. [general infant first aid guidance]
