when is hispanic heritage month

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15 to October 15. This month-long celebration honors the history, culture, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The starting date, September 15, coincides with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile following shortly after. The month also includes Columbus Day or Día de la Raza on October 12. Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long observance in 1968 and was expanded to a full month in 1988.
