National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually in the United States from September 15 to October 15. This month-long celebration recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic culture on the nation's history and achievements. The observance began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was expanded to a month in 1988. The starting date, September 15, was chosen because it marks the independence anniversary of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico's independence day follows on September 16, and Chile celebrates its independence on September 18. The period also includes Columbus Day or Día de la Raza in October within the 30-day observance.
