The start date, September 15, marks the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18, all within this period. The observance began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was expanded to a month in 1988 by legislation signed by President Ronald Reagan.
