The social media ban for under-16s in Australia is set to take effect on December 10, 2025. This law mandates that age-restricted social media platforms must take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under the age of 16 from creating or keeping accounts. The ban applies to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube, among others. No parental consent exceptions will be allowed, and social media companies that fail to comply may face fines up to AUD $50 million. However, there will be no fines or penalties for young people or their families for having accounts; enforcement targets the companies themselves.
