When performing abdominal thrusts, the correct placement of your fist on the patient's abdomen is just above the person's navel (belly button), specifically midway between the umbilicus (navel) and the xiphoid process (the lower end of the sternum). The thumb side of your fist should be placed inward, and then you grasp your fist with the other hand. The thrusts should be quick and directed inward and upward, as if trying to lift the person up, to create pressure that can expel the obstruction from the airway.
This placement ensures effective abdominal pressure on the diaphragm, helping to dislodge the foreign object blocking the airway. If the person is pregnant or obese, chest thrusts are recommended instead of abdominal thrusts.
