In New Zealand in 2025, you should get a COVID-19 test (using a rapid antigen test or RAT) if you have COVID-19 symptoms such as cold, flu, cough, sneezing, runny nose, or fever. It is recommended to test as soon as possible when symptoms develop. If you test positive, you should isolate for at least 5 days, even with mild symptoms. If you live in a household where someone has tested positive, you should take a RAT test 3 days after the case tested positive. If you develop symptoms later, test again immediately. If negative but symptoms persist, test again after 24 and 48 hours. Close contacts who do not develop symptoms do not need to test but should monitor for symptoms for 10 days. Repeat testing is advised if symptoms continue or if you have a higher risk of severe illness. Rapid antigen tests are now available for purchase at community pharmacies and retail stores, as free RATs ended in September 2024. PCR tests are less commonly used and require a clinical referral. Summary:
- Test immediately if you have symptoms.
- Test 3 days after a household member tests positive.
- Isolate for 5 days if tested positive.
- Monitor symptoms if exposed, test if symptoms develop.
- Buy RATs from pharmacies or stores as free tests ended Sept 2024.
This reflects the current testing guidance and availability in New Zealand as of 2025.
