You should update your vehicle registration certificate (V5C) when any of the following changes occur:
- Change of your name or address as the registered keeper.
- Changes to the vehicle such as color, engine, cylinder capacity, fuel type, seating capacity, weight (for large vehicles), chassis or body shell modifications.
- Transfer of ownership (selling or buying a vehicle).
- Corrections to any mistakes on the V5C.
- Changes to vehicle identification numbers (VIN, chassis number, frame number for motorbikes).
Additionally, if you change your address, you must update the V5C within 30 days of moving. Failure to update your vehicle registration details on time can lead to fines up to £1000 and other penalties. You can update the registration certificate by completing the relevant section of the V5C and sending it to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), or in some cases, you can do it online or at the post office.
