"When They See Us" is a 2019 American crime drama television miniseries created, co-written, and directed by Ava DuVernay. It premiered on Netflix on May 31, 2019, in four parts. The series is based on the true events of the 1989 Central Park jogger case, which involved five Black and Latino male teenagers who were falsely accused and prosecuted for the rape and assault of a white woman in Central Park, Manhattan, New York City. The series explores the lives of the five young men and their families, highlighting the injustice and wrongful convictions they faced. The convictions were eventually vacated in 2002 when another man confessed to the crime. The miniseries received critical acclaim and several award nominations, including Primetime Emmy Awards.
