Acetaminophen was first synthesized in 1878 by the American chemist Harmon Northrop Morse. It was initially created through a two-step chemical process involving 4-nitrophenol. However, it did not come into widespread medical use until the mid-20th century. The drug was introduced to the market as Tylenol by McNeil Laboratories in 1955, initially as a children's elixir for fever and pain relief, later becoming an over-the-counter medication in 1960 after Johnson & Johnson acquired McNeil Laboratories.
