Acetaminophen was first synthesized by Harmon Northrop Morse in 1877 (or 1878) at Johns Hopkins University. However, it was not until 1887 that it was first tried on humans by clinical pharmacologist Joseph von Mering, and it did not appear commercially until around 1950. The early discovery dates back to the late 19th century, but widespread clinical use and marketing came much later in the 20th century.
