Alaska was sold by Russia to the United States in 1867. The treaty for the sale was signed on March 30, 1867, and the U.S. Senate ratified it on May 15, 1867. American sovereignty over Alaska became legally effective on October 18, 1867. The purchase price was $7.2 million, roughly two cents per acre.
