The play "An Inspector Calls" was written by J.B. Priestley in 1945. It was first performed in 1945 in the Soviet Union and then in 1946 in the UK. Although it was written and first produced in the mid-1940s, the play is set in the year 1912, two years before the outbreak of World War I. Priestley chose this earlier setting to highlight social inequalities and political attitudes before the upheavals brought by the two world wars and the subsequent social reforms in Britain.
